The Bone House Blog Tour Day Three

I think Becky’s post yesterday echoes my thoughts about The Bone House. I’m enjoying the series so far from a “what’s going to happen next” perspective. But I’ve been wondering where the typical Christian part of the story is. I read a lot of “secular”  fiction so I don’t need overt Christianity in a story to enjoy it. But I think I had some kind of bias already in mind given the publisher of this series.

In the first book, The Skin Map, I didn’t like Mina too much. But I have to admit, she’s my favorite part of The Bone House. I’m anxious to see what happens to her and to the coffee-house in Prague throughout the rest of the series.

The Bone House Blog Tour Day Two

From the author’s website:

The Bone House

A BRIGHT EMPIRES NOVEL

Lawhead has embarked on his most ambitious writing project to date: the five-book BRIGHT EMPIRES series. The second volume, The Bone House, will be published in the USA on 6 September 2011.

The series is underpinned by the cutting-edge work of quantum physicists, natural philosophers, and cosmologists who describe a universe not only much greater, but also far stranger than we imagine.

Is this the future of science fiction and fantasy?

‘I have not read or written anything quite like it,’ says Lawhead. ‘It’s been forming in my mind for at least fifteen years. Now I am finally writing it, because I think I can finally do justice to such an intricately woven storyline.’

“Once again, Lawhead has penned an epic tale, putting a new spin on an old legend. Full of rich imagery, this page-turner will appeal to fans of suspense and fantasy.” – Library Journal

CSFF Blog Tour Day One

The Christian Science Fiction and Fantasy blog tour book for March is The Resurrection by Mike Duran. In conjunction with the CSFF Blog Tour, I received a free copy of this book.

At one point while I was reading this book, I had put it down on the coffee table in the living room. My husband walked by and asked “Whatcha reading? Something about witches?” That got me thinking about book covers.

I hadn’t paid much attention to the cover of this book since I already read a little about it when it was presented for the tour this month. So I took a look at the cover as if I were looking at it in the bookstore and trying to decide whether to buy it or not.

I concluded that I would buy the book based on the dark, kind of ominous look of the cover and the way the story’s presented on the back cover copy.

CSFF Blog Tour Day Three

First I want to apologize for the lack of depth to my posts for this months tour. The Wolf of Tebron is a good story, well written, and well thought out by author C. S. Lakin. If you like fairy tales or fables or just like to read stories that make you think or love a good allegory, give this book go. I guess I haven’t had much to say because I’m just not a huge fan of allegory.

Ms. Lakin creates distinct, well-developed characters. Her characterization was my favorite part of the book. I feel that if I met Joran or Ruyah I would know them immediately.

She’s also quite good at description. When reading about the house of the Moon, I could feel the clutter closing in around me. Likewise, when reading about Joran’s visit to the palace of the Sun I could see the walls and walls of books, could see the elegance of the palace.

I think The Wolf of Tebron is appropriate for teens and adults.

Please check out the other blog tour participants whose links you’ll find in the sidebar.

In conjunction with the CSFF Blog Tour, I received a free copy of this book from the publisher.

CSFF Blog Tour Day Two

Today I’d like to point folks to Robert Treskillard’s review of The Wolf of Tebron from yesterday. He digs deeply into the story to discuss the allegory. He also touches on the theology. I find his review very interesting, pointing out things about the story I did not notice.

While I can admit that if you dig as deeply into the story as he did, some of the same points bother me-namely the lack of repentance-but I read the story in a much lighter way. But that’s just the way I read.

Ruyah as representative of Christ doesn’t bother me, though I can see how it would if you look at it more than at it’s surface.  That Ruyah watches Joran even before Joran tries to communicate with Ruyah comforts me. Brings to mind God is always there, watching, close, available, involved.

I hope you will visit the other tour participants. The varying thoughts and opinions will no doubt give you something to think about.
